This rating allows you to take first time students on a tandem skydive and introduce them to the world we love so much. You get the unique opportunity of introducing first time jumpers to freefall and the thrill of skydiving. You get to relive your first jump each and every time you make a tandem skydive. What an awesome way to be involved in this sport. Additionally you will be trained how to conduct "USPA Tandem Progression Training Method", which is becoming quite popular with most DZ's. So you do not only have the ability to take first timers, but you will also be able to be part of the instructor core at your local skydiving center.

THE USPA TANDEM INSTRUCTOR RATING ALLOWS YOU TO:

1. Exercise all privileges of the USPA Coach rating.
2. Conduct tandem instructor jumps and the tandem instructor FJC or the transition training to the tandem method.
3. Conduct training in the general portions of any FJC.
4. Train and supervise jumps with non-method specific students.
5. Conduct the A-license quiz and check dive.
6. Verify License applications IAW SIMs Section 3.
7. Supervise a USPA Coach in training and making recurrency jumps with licensed skydivers.

1. Minimum of 18 years of age.
2. 50 jumps within the last year.
3. Jumpmaster or Instructor rating, or the Basic Instructor Course (BIC),
or coach.
4. One intentional or emergency cutaway.
5. Four hours of freefall time.
6. Current FAA Class III Flight Physical, or parachuting physical approved by a national parachuting association or the military.

All Candidates must meet the FAA, USPA, and the Manufacturer's
prerequisites before attending the Tandem Instructor Certification Course.
Proof of prerequisites must be shown to the Examiner. Along with original
logs and documents Candidate must submit copies of:.
      a. Logs showing three years of skydiving experience.
      b. Logs showing 500 freefalls.
3. Logs showing 50 jumps within the last 12 months.
4. Logs showing four hours in freefall.
5. Logs showing one cutaway (intentional or emergency),
6. Expert license (USPA D) and ratings (J/M, I, BIC), coach.
7. Current FAA Class III Flight Physical, or parachuting physical approved by a national parachuting association or the military. (See FAR 105.45)

The manufacturer's portion, the UPT Tandem Instructor Rating Course (TIRC) will take approximately 3-4 days (weather permitting).

Note: add one additional day for the USPA instructor rating (see below USPA ratings) total 4-5 days.
Note: If you take the manufacturer's course with us, we include the USPA Tandem course at an additional cost of $75.00.

UPT requires:

• 500 ram air freefalls
• 100 jumps in the past 12 months
• 6 hours of freefall time

The combined USPA and Manufacturer's course consists of one day of classroom, 10-evaluation jumps and a written exam. The class starts with the verification of the requirements. The IRM and Sigma Manuals will be the course books. I strongly recommend you purchase or download this manual (print it) from UPT's tandem certification page. The questions for the written test are in the manuals or on that page, and there is a study guide online. Take the new Sigma 103-question test and have it ready when you show up for class. It is an open book paper test and needs to be done prior to the course.

4. Hold a Current FAA Class III Medical Certificate, Foreign Equivalent or Military HALO/Airborne Physical
5. At least 3 Years in the Sport

7. One intentional or emergency cutaway (See below notes)
8. 50 Jumps within the last 12 months (Proof with Logbook)
9. 4 hours of documented free-fall (Proof with Logbook)
10. Purchase the TICC Packet from Strong Enterprises (See Below Note - Must have it for the course)

Note: Strong requires you to have this packet. This packet contains the course books, videos and the rating application forms. The exam is an open book test We need you to arrive at the course with the exam completed and this packet . The cost of the packet is approx $160.00 (with shipping). Keep in mind that packets are typically mailed using US Postal Service. Order your packet early enough that you are able to review the materials before your class.
Note: If only missing the cutaway requirement talk to your examiner as special equipment is available to satisfy this requirement. We can order a special cutaway rig to fulfill your requirement, but you need to give us enough time to get to schedule that equipment for your course.

The Strong Tandem Instructor Certification Course (TICC) will take approximately 3-4 days (weather permitting).

If the Tandem Instructor Rating is your first USPA Instructor rating, that is, you have only held the USPA Coach Rating prior, then you must complete the additional training required for this USPA Rating.

We will need an extra day to fulfill the USPA requirements. The combined USPA and Manufacturer's course consists of one addition day of classroom, 5 more evaluation jumps and an exam (in the IRM or USPA's website after you are enrolled). Make sure you have completed all of USPA's required pre-requisite activity working with an instructor, and have them verify this has been done online through USPA's verification system. The class starts with the verification of the requirements (Manufacturer and USPA) You will need a current SIM, IRM, and the Strong TICC Packet. The questions for the written test are in the manuals (SIM, IRM & Packet).

THE USPA TANDEM INSTRUCTOR RATING:

After completion of the initial UPT Tandem Instructor Course you may participate in the USPA instructor Rating Course. The pre-requisites are:

1. USPA Membership (Current)
2. Hold at a minimum a USPA Coach rating (Current)
3. Meet the manufacturers requirements and completed the Manufacturer's TIRC/TICC
4. You will need an IRM and SIM. You will need to take the test for Tandem instructor and General Instructor prior to the course either on paper from the IRM or online after you are enrolled. (If you are only a coach and taking the test on paper, you need to take the general instructor's exam and the tandem instructor's exam. If you are already and USPA Instructor you need to take the tandem instructor's exam.)
5. The pre-requisite activities from your online or paper proficiency card needs to be signed off at items 1-8 if you are a coach and at item 1-2 if you are already a USPA instructor in another discipline (AFF, SL, IAD). See instructions from USPA.

If you already possess a current Tandem Instructor rating from another approved manufacturer you can get crossed over to the Strong Enterprises System. To qualify for crossover-training Strong requires that you will have a full day of classroom, have the Strong TICC Packet (ordered from the manufacturer see above info), take the Strong written exam, make three Phase 1 jumps under the supervision of an Examiner and two phase 2 jumps.

To qualify for Strong crossover training you must:

1. Hold a current tandem instructor rating from another approved manufacturer (Current FAA Medical or equivalent)
2. Have at least 100 jumps on that system
3. Purchase the Strong Tandem Packet prior to the course
4. Have at least 25 tandem jumps in the past 12 months
5. Meet all the requirements for the initial Strong rating (see above)
6. Candidates with 100-499 tandem jumps must make three jumps with a current Strong Examiner supervising and two in Phase 2 with a current Strong instructor supervising.
7. Candidates with 500 or more tandem jumps and 50 tandem jumps in the last 12 months need to make two evaluation jumps

If you already possess a current Tandem Instructor rating from another manufacturer you can get crossed over to a Sigma rating.

To qualify for Sigma crossover training you must:

1. Possess a current Tandem rating from another manufacturer
2. 25 logged Tandem Jumps
3. USPA Card with D-License and Instructional endorsement card
4. FAA Medical Certificate or military equivalent

The course consists of a day of classroom and a minimum of 2-3 examination jumps. I recommend that you get the Sigma manuals from the UPT website for the course. Crossover Tandem Instructors must also complete the new Sigma test available on their website.
